We Were Promised Jetpacks

Scottish independent music is booming at the minute, or so I’m told. Independently that is. It’s also full of angst and sadness with bands like The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit being the leading lights. But it’s another band who has taken my interest of late. We Were Promised Jetpacks seem to do the angst alright, but not in your teeny emo way, they do it alongside building guitars, anthemic chorus’s with dare I use a made up word here, chant-ability?

I hate using angst actually, as most music is full of heartache and torture, that’s what music usually is. There’s just no other way of putting it sometimes.

Anyway, single “Quiet Little Voices” builds from a nice guitar riff to an upbeat, lifting single that shits all over White Lies tat. If you’re looking for something to fill the void before Jonny Foreigner release anything new (other than the three new tracks on their ‘Feels Like Summer’ EP….available here for free), on October 29th, you won’t go far wrong with this. You can simultaneously tap your feet, not your head, sing along, go “whoahhhh ohh ohh ohh” and possibly jump around if the mood takes you.

They can do the quiet as well as the loud, with their soft Scottish accents a mile apart from the annoying The View, the soft guitars, piano and harmonising at the end of “Roll Up Your Sleeves” shows a band that are not one trick ponies.

The album, ‘These Four Walls’ is out already, and they’ll be playing some festivals (Truck, Standon Calling) this summer. Then come November they’ll be all over the place on tour, the Borderline in London, and Oakford Social in Reading seem like good places to catch them.
